Product Description
Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

5 out of 5 stars The Hunger Games - Hard to put down   September 9, 2010
cmonz
I found this book almost impossible to put down once it got going. Everything about this book is interesting and compelling. I think I would classify this book as an action/adventure book, but with a little bit of politics and romance thrown in to keep it interesting. As a guy that doesn't read romance books, I was nervous that the romantic plot was going to overtake the book but it didn't, it was just the right amount to keep it interesting.

I was surprised to see this listed as a children's book because some of the violence did get a little disturbing. But I would recommend Hunger Games to any teenager or older.

I read Hunger Games on the Kindle and did not notice any formatting errors or typos.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING.   September 8, 2010

No summaries or spoilers here... and since this book has received nearly 1200 reviews already, I'll keep this short and high level.

This book is magnificent. Ms. Collins has achieved literary magic here. Whether you are a mature young adult or enjoying your retirement, this is a book you will love. Be prepared to immediately dive into the next book, however, as this one leaves you breathless and without complete closure.

Atmosphere & setting: Dark. Set in a brutal post-apocalyptic world. Survival of the fittest is law. U.S. after our world has fallen apart and been ripped apart by war. Nature has taken back ownership of the land and the politicians rule over the remaining population with an iron fist.

Characters: Highly developed- you will fall in love with them. They are all rich, colorful and captivating. From our narrator, the bold and practical Katniss, to her endearing, yet determined partner Peeta, to Gale whose grey eyes seem to watch the action with you from his distant perch, to even the supporting characters that get no more than a scene or two to make an impression. These are lasting characters with lives of their own- hopes, fears, dreams.

Themes and plot: This is not a light book. It deals with abuse of power, political and otherwise, class prejudice, family loyalty, loss of a parent, murder as entertainment, the harshness and beauty of nature, and what people will do when they are desperate to survive. There is cruelty and there is hope. A surprisingly dark book for a young audience, but full of important messages and the demonstration that the thread of human decency will always persevere. Most of the more gruesome violence is implied and not detailed.

In terms of age appropriateness, I would ask how mature your young adult is. I could have read this at 10. Now as an adult, I would suggest 13+. No matter what age you read it, be prepared to get wrapped up in the devastation and miracle of this world

Once I started reading, I was glued to the pages until it was done. And now... now I need more of this world.

FURTHER READING:
If you are interested in other young, strong female leads for young adults, I suggest the lighter, more fairy tale styled fantasy Sonia in Vert by Avi Ornstein. This has a much lighter atmosphere, but still handles important themes of equality and class prejudice.

For more mature readers of 16+, the slightly more romance centric fastasy series The Battle Sylph which also deals with weighty themes around young heroines.

5 out of 5 stars What a truly engaging story - couldn't put it down once I started!   September 8, 2010

After going through "Gregor the Overlander" with my 7-year-old, I was curious to see what else Suzanne Collins had penned. Upon searching, I found that there was an online fury about the upcoming release of the end of her "Hunger Games" trilogy.

I noticed displays for Hunger Games events at my local bookstore. I read some of the reviews and although it wasn't appropriate for my 7-year-old, I thought I might give it a try. I was more than slightly dubious because it was YA fiction and, to be honest, I have tried several titles that have been blissfully popular and wasn't that impressed.

This story was so well-crafted I started it on a Sunday morning and couldn't put it down until evening when I finished the book. This book is amazing.

I don't know how to describe it to others except to say there is almost every kind of conflict known to man in this book. The ideal of humanity, loss, suffering, oppression...it's all there...Will it be considered a great fiction masterpiece upside Orwell and Huxley? Hmmm...can't speculate on that, but I think it's definitely several hundred notches above some of the tepid mush that is passing for great fiction.

1 out of 5 stars RIP off of battle royale .   September 8, 2010

Suzanne collins has done a great job in ripping off a great story and im not just talking about the idea of a Dystopian future and pitting people against each other until there is only one standing either.

The stories of battle royale and hunger games are very similar. Very. They are centered around teenagers forced to kill each other, and only one can survive. The government, which is all-powerful, has put them there because they are trying to control some aspect of the country. Those running the "games" can alter the environment so the chances of conflict is higher. The kids have access to weapons, though what they can get isn't always equal to what someone else has. There's a romance between the two survivors. The two survivors break the rules in order for both of them to leave the "games."

In the case of battle royale and hunger games they are tons of similaries and a chain of similaries thats when you know its plagiarism:

they both on an island,
they are school kids,
they are put there by the government,
they are forced to kill eachother,
both of the main character's fall in love and escape breaking the rules,
both books have the idea of the supply packs,
the boy and girl surviving,
similar unique deaths.

How many books have these in them ? just two hunger games and battle royale.

However suzanne collins though interviews would have you believe it was her own idea.

There are on more than 5 occasions carbon copy almost exact scene's in hunger games that were in battle royale. So similar in fact i felt uncomfortable and also angry that koushun takami's story had been repainted and re sold by collins, you're talking odds of millions that these 5 scene's were thought of separately. I don't want to say the scene's because i don't want to spoil either book. But read both stories i guarantee you will be just as angry at me that the story you fell in love with wasn't suzanne collins story it was koushun takami's.

i haven't read hunger game's 2 (catching fire) but i'm going to guess susie collins will rip off battle royale 2 by the two survivor's trying to topple the government.

p.s They are difference's between battle royale and hunger games its a shame though that suzanne collins stole those idea's off stephen king's the long walk .

5 out of 5 stars RIVETING   September 7, 2010

Recommended by one of my favorite authors, I was hoping it would as good as she says it was - IT WAS EVEN BETTER!! I am so glad I read this at a time when the following 2 books were available. I burned through Hunger Games in 1 day - it was that good. It's very rare, at least for me, to have a book move me, the story staying with me way after I've read the last page. There was a little bit of everything - mystery/suspense, a love story, politics, action and humor in just the right places. The setting is on the dark side, but fitting for the futuristic storyline. I love how the plot was constantly moving and changed just when I thought it wouldn't - kept me on my toes and glued to story. I dove right into book #2.

I would highly recommend this book!!
